The finance ministry approved an interest rate of 8.5% on provident fund deposit for 2020-21 paving way for the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to credit the interest in millions of EPF accounts.

The EPFO also tweeted from its official Twitter account that it has "issued instructions to credit interest of 8.5% for the year 2020-21 into some 25.0 crore accounts of members with EPFO."

Any employee who contributes to an EPF account can check the balance in his/her EPF account via online channels; they do not have to wait for the employer to share the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) statement at the end of the year to know the balance.

You can check your EPF balance using any of these facilities- Umang App, EPFO Member e-Sewa portal, SMS or a missed call.

If your EPF is managed by the exempted establishment (i.e., a Trust), then you should contact your employer to check your provident fund balance.

Here are four ways to check your EPF account balance:

I. Using Umang app
Employees can view their PF balance on mobile phones using the Umang app. Umang app was launched by the government to provide access to various government services in a single place. One can view EPF Passbook, raise claim and even track Claim using the app. To get started, you need to complete a one-time registration using your phone number.

II. Using the EPFO portal
Instead of the unified portal, users will now be able to access their PF passbooks on a different website run by the EPFO. The unified portal can, however, still be used for transactional services like transfers.

To view your PF passbook on the portal you need to have your account tagged with your Universal Account Number (UAN). You can download or print your EPF passbook from the website. Follow these steps-

Step 1: The member passbook is available at www.epfindia.gov.in
Step 2: Click on 'For Employees' under 'Our Services'

epf1

Step 3: Click on 'Member Passbook' under 'Services'

epf2

It will take you to the page as shown below-

You can even directly go to the page:

To access the passbook of your EPF account, do make sure your UAN is activated by your employer. Remember, UAN is provided by the EPFO but it has to be verified and activated by your employer. So, if yours has already been activated, use it along with your password to login and check your passbook balance.

The passbook facility is not available for members of establishments that are exempt under the EPF Scheme, 1952. If you still try to log in, you will get this message: "Passbook not available to this Member-id as this pertains to the exempted establishment (i.e. Trust). Requested to contact your employer."

III. By sending an SMS
If your UAN is registered with the EPFO, you can get the details of your latest contribution and PF balance by sending an SMS to 7738299899. You need to send this message: EPFOHO UAN ENG. 'ENG' is the first three characters of the preferred language. So, if you want to receive the message in Marathi, then type in EPFOHO UAN MAR.

The facility is available in 10 languages - English (default), Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali. The SMS must be sent from the registered mobile number of UAN.

EPFO also sends details of members available in its records. So, make sure your UAN is seeded with your bank account, Aadhaar and PAN, else ask your employer to seed it for you.

IV. By giving a missed call
If you are registered on the UAN portal, giving a missed call on 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number will get you the details. Do make sure your UAN is seeded with your bank account number, Aadhaar and PAN. You can also ask your employer to seed them for you. This service is free of cost.

Earlier PF balance could also be checked via EPFO app but now discontinued
Earlier, EPF members could check their balance using the M-Sewa app which could be downloaded from Google Play Store. However, now this service has been discontinued. The Member e-Sewa portal states: EPFO services are now available on the UMANG (Unified Mobile APP for New Governance). The UMAN G APP can be downloaded by giving a missed call 9718397183. The APP can also be downloaded from UMANG website or from the play/app stores. Erstwhile EPF mobile services are being discontinued.
